New to this Group
Hi everyone,
Just found this group. I have psoriasis and sometimes it drives me
crazy. It crops up in my scalp nad around my eyes and nose. There is
so little I can put around my eyes. What I have been doing lately is
using vaseline. This seems to be working very well right now. I have
been to a dermatologist, but even she has no meds that can be put
near the eyes.
So, for now, I’ll just keep using the vaseline. I am so grateful to
be living in Florida. I can’t imagine how bad it could get if I lived
in a cold climate.
It is so good to be among people who will understand what I’m talking
about when it comes to psoriasis.
Y’all have a wonderful day.

Sounds like you may have perioral dermatitis. Check
out the web site for the American Academy of
Dermatitis at
www.aad.org/public/publications/pamphlet/perioraldermatitis.htm.
You will find that if you have perioral dermatitis
which affects the mouth lines, nose, and around the
eyes, you should not use steroids, but antibiotics,
such as tetracycline to cure it. Steroids can worsen
the condition. Anyway, the site is pretty helpful for
both psoriasis and dermatitis.

hi steve,i apply the olive oil to my spots after showering.i pour the oil into a
cap and put a thin layer on my psoriasis.then let it dry before getting
dressed.you can put vanilla extract or any other kind in to make yourself smell
better.as for the zinc oxide i apply it like you would like any other cream.i
spread it on thin a couple hours before bed.wearing white also helps because you
can bleach the stains out in the wash.although i haven’t had any clothes ruined
by these products.i have found by using these two products i am 2/3 less
flakey.now if only i could get the red out of my spots.hope this helps.take care
and have fun,jamey.

Hi Jamey,
I’ll try that. I do have both in the house.
I looked up perioral dermatitis and it is not that. My dermatologist has
diagnosed it as psoriasis. I can’t wear any makeup, and the redness does look
terrible. Thank goodness I am 70 years old, so the makeup is not a problem.
Thanks for your suggestion.
I don’t just believe in Miracles,
I expect them!
Have a great day.

Hi Jamey,
I tried the Desitin that I had in the house and it worked great.
Scales are gone and even a lot of the redness is gone. I still have
the itching, but not as bad.
Thanks for the tip.
A very grateful

Hi. Welcome to the group. Did you always live in FL? If not did you
improve once you moved here? Just wondering….
Sue

No, I used to live in Jersey. I had bouts of psoriasis behind my ears before I
moved down here. It always seemed to clear up in the warm weather.
I just got it on my scalp and face within the past 5 years. My dermatologist
tells me it will always get worse in the colder weather, and so far she has been
right. The sun does seem to help, but then you have the problem of skin cancer.
I have tried some prescription meds, but nothing really works to my
satisfaction. I seem to do better with the Vaseline and now the creamy desitin.
I just keep doing what works for me at the time.
I don’t just believe in Miracles,
I expect them!
Have a great day.

UV radiation, and even better, full spectrum sunlight have been proven to help
with psoriasis and eczema. However, you have to expose yourself correctly or you
will do more harm than good. I highly suggest reading The Healing Sun by Richard
Hobday if you plan to use sunlight for therapy. It MUST be done properly or you
will damage your skin. Here are some tips until you can read the book:
The 11 Dos and Don’ts About How to Sunbathe Safely
1. Plan your exposure and avoid cramming all of your sunbathing into
two or three weeks of the year.
2. If you go abroad to a hotter or cooler climate, take a series of "air
baths" for a few days before you sun bathe.
3. Avoid baking. When you sunbathe for health, the air temperature
should ideally be below 64 degrees F.
4. The most important time of the year to sunbathe is in the spring and
early summer. It is unwise for you to bathe at midday in July and
August (unless you already have a deep tan or are darkly pigmented)
because as the sun’s rays are too intense at this time. In the early
spring and fall, however, these times are acceptable as the sun’s rays
are much less intense.
5. Early morning sunshine seems to be particularly beneficial, so start
just after dawn.
6. Frequent short exposures are better than prolonged contact to sunlight.
7. Because it is essential to obtain the full spectrum of sunlight, avoid
sunscreens. You
May wear light clothing or hats to ensure that your face and neck are protected
from the aging effects of the sun.
8. If you are sensitive to sunlight , begin sunbathing your feet and then legs
before
exposing the abdomen and chest with great caution. This is clearly the safest
way to
sunbathe, especially if you have existing problems with burning. It may take up
to three
weeks before you are able to tolerate complete exposure of your body to the sun.
9. If you want to tan, pay very close attention to the way your tan gradually
develops.
Work on your tolerance to sunlight before exposing the more sensitive parts of
your
body.
10. Stay very alert and listen to your body. If your skin becomes uncomfortable
or warm,
put on some clothing to cover the area of the body that is uncomfortable or
retreat to a
shaded area. Your body will usually give you the clues if you listen for them.
11. Above all, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER get burned. You must absolutely avoid that at
all
costs.
HTH!

Hi Jamey,
Desitin doesn’t have lanolin in it.
The active ingredient is: Zinc Oxide 10%
inactive ingredients are: clylomrthicone, dimethicone fragrance, methylparaben,
microcrystallinewax, mineral oil, proplparaben, purified water, sodium borate,
sorbitan sesquioleate, white petrolatum and white wax.
Heaven knows if I spelled it all right, but that what I got off the tube. It
also says to not get it near the eyes. That’s my biggest problem, because it
gets really bad around my eyes and there is nothing i can use. My opthamologist
gave me an ointment to help with the itching around the eyes and on the lids,
but it does nothing to help the psoriasis.
Have a great day,

Hello folks,
I was wondering if anyone has considered/tried out
laser therapy for acne treatment. I’ve been rading a
lot about it, it has really helped several patients.
I realize that it is EXTREMLY expensive and long term
effects have not been studied, but laser therapy has
been known to be non-invasive and safe.
I was wondering if anyone took this treatment for
active acne and if they benefited from it.
I am really tired of trying things to better my system
to cure my acne, but it is pretty obvious that my skin
is still not happy !
I am strongly considering laser treatment, and even
though its expensive, if it delivers, i may go for it.
it would be great if you all could give me some
advice..
thanks - sid

Sid,
Yes, non-ablative, or cold lasers such as the N Lite have been successful in
treating a variety of skin conditions. However, they are expensive
treatmentsthat are only a temporary fix to a chronic, WHOLE PERSON problem.
Until you address all the issues (nutritional, emotional/spiritual, topical
products, internal cleansing), you will NEVER get permanent results. I wish you
luck, and encourage you to keep trying! This skin condition was sent your way
for a reason. There are things you need to learn about your body and about
yourself as a whole person in order to heal the acne. Then, through the process
of doing this, you will learn so many valuable lessons that you will literally
become a different person. That’s what happened to me many years ago, and I am
so grateful to my old friend acne for FORCING me to better my health,
emotionally, spiritually and physically. Otherwise, I never would have changed a
thing and would not be who I am now.
Sorry for rambling!

hi Amy, i just read your post and i too live in Florida! my 12 year old daughter
was diagnosed last august and she had it around her eyes as well. vaseline
definitely will do the trick it took her about 2-3 weeks to clear it up and it
(knock on wood) has not returned to that area. she applied it several times a
day and always splashed the area with water (so that the skin was in a
"drinking/absorption mode) before adding a very thin layer of the vaseline. i
hope it works for you too!

Hi,
I’m new to this forum and I joined because my (15 yrs old) has recently
developed psoriasis.
Regarding laser treatments for acne, I recommend a book by Dr. Perricone
as he is a Dermatologist and writes that acne and eczema are inflammatory
conditions. He has several books out, but if you do a search, I’m sure you
will find it. He often gives lectures on PBS stations. Check it out, I’m
sure you will learn plenty.

does anyone know if vaseline might help blotchiness on the face? I am afraid
to put anything on my face but it has been getting blotchy often. It’s not
even eczema but just blotchy which I think might be allergies (or the
dog!?)….
September 30th, 2005 at 2:05 pm
I wouldn’t recommend petrochemicals for the skin no matter what the problem. You
may as well wrap your face in plastic wrap. Vaseline forms an occlusive membrane
on the skin that suffocates it, not allowing toxins or co2 to pass out or oxygen
and nutrients to come in. Blotchiness can be caused by a number of things and it
may be difficult to pin down the cause, unless you have changed something in
your routine lately. If you are looking for a protective coating for your skin,
mix virgin organic olive oil with coconut oil 50/50. The olive oil will not sink
in as quickly and thoroughly as the coconut oil and will leave a protective film
on the skin. The coconut oil will penetrate and help the healing process.

I did recently get some Coconut oil. I had trouble finding it the last
couple of times I looked, but this time the health food store had some, he said
it
was hard to keep stocked as there has been a lot of write ups recently about
it. I haven’t noticed any difference. But I am not ingesting it…only
putting on my hands at night with socks on my hands…I’ve been afraid to put
any on
my face. I just found out I am pregnant and my Dr. said I can use it as
long as I don’t ingest any…I also thought being pregnant would be a miracle
cure (at least so I have heard) but I am having more trouble with my blotchy
face
and bad eczema on my hands. I know my body is going through alot of changes
so it’s hard, but I was hopiing for some relief!
Has anyone been better while pregnant?
I also just started treatments up again for my low immune system, so another
reason my body might be adjusting…
Oh, I did try A & D ointment and it seems to be ok…my hands are still bad
but not worse…I had trouble getting an ointment prescription filled that
healed my hands up last time they got infected so I went with the A & D…a lot
cheaper too!
Just looking for some relief so I can keep joyful about my pregnancy!

Congratulations! You will probably get a little worse before you get better
since your body will automatically go into detox mode to keep your fetus safe. I
cannot believe your doctor told you not to eat coconut oil while pregnant!!! How
does he think Pacific Islanders have survived for hundreds of thousands of years
eating coconut everyday? Geez. I am amazed at the things that come out of these
peoples mouths. Coconut oil is found in baby formula! It is fed to invalids,
infants and the sick because it is easy to digest and helps fight infection
while nourishing the body. If I were you, I’d get a new OB/GYN.

that came from my allergist/immunologist. Also, it says on the package to
consult your Dr if you are pregnant or nursing…the coconut oil hasn’t helped
my hands anyway. thanks.
