Son with severe Eczema

I am new to this site and I am fed up with steriods and all that
doctor stuff. My son is 22 months old and his Eczema appeared when he
was 6 weeks old. It is all over his body, including his scalp. I am
worried about all of the steriods we have used. We also were using
Elidel for awhile before all of the bad news. The Elidel was the only
thing that was actually helping to control the Eczema. He has never
been Eczema free. I am here to get any advice I can about anything
anyone has tried that has succeed or failed. I am ordering flaxseed
oil now and I hope that will help him some. My poor son has to stay
inside most of the time due to the heat. He is so miserable at times
and itches so badly that he bleeds and bleeds. It is so frustrating
for me because I get so upset cause he doesnt understand that he makes
it worse. If anyone can give me some ideas that have worked for them
to try, I am willing. I am in dire need of support and help for my
poor boy. Thank you for this support group/site

Karena, I am so sorry to hear of your son’s eczema.
Deep in my heart, I believe it stems from colon/gut
issues and immune system function. I believe we may
increase our children’s chances of developing eczema
when we give them antibiotics and immunizations. I
think it is linked to our own
    problems/allergies/gut/yeast problems, (as mothers).
My daughter also has eczema. She is 3 1/2 now, but
has had it since infancy. She has had periods of some
relief, but it has been there all along. WE too used
the now black-boxed topicals…we used Protopic. It
did make her skin look great, but we have to realize
the underlying issue was never addressed. We were
supressing their immune system, so it couldn’t react
to the histamine explosions in their bodies. I have

to tell you, I am mentally exhausted at this point,
trying to find an answer to our issues. The things I
feel are most important are probiotics, fish oil, and
avoiding sugar, grains, and processed food as much as
possible. WE do mostly organic foods. Pure shea
butter, 100 percent, is really helping the appearance
of her skin, but she still itches when her skin is
exposed to the air. I don’t know if you have
realized, but they do feel better when they have long
    sleeves, and long pants on.
I could write forever about alot of things, I really
empathize with you and your son. Prayer seems to help
me. Try to stay away from homogonized and pasteurized
milk products also. WE get raw milk, and that has a
positive effect on her bowels and skin.

My heart goes out to you. Try to enjoy each day and
laugh with your son. Laughter is one of the best
medicines. Do you know any other exercise that
    massages you from the inside?

Hello all, just wanted to respond to this about your son… I (35) have eczema
and so does my son (6) … For me, stress and food intake seem to cause most of
the eczema flare ups…. However, one thing that I do notice, is that the water
that I take a shower or bath in also has an influence on the way my skin is…
At home, I am on a well with lots of clorides in it… Causes my skin to dry out
and itch quite a bit… I then take a shower at work, (on city water) and my
skin does a lot better. When my son was younger, I would buy bottled water and
give him a bath in that and it seemed to help.. For the itch, if nothing else
seemed to help, I would grind up some oatmeal and put it in a sock and put it in
the bath with him… very soothing for the skin and he would always sleep alot
    better.

It is very difficult watching our kids go thru what we did with this skin
disease. You would think by now science would have had a cure.

My prayers are with you all…

    Nikki,

Thank you Nikki for you positive and warming email. I
tell myself all the time that there are other people
in the world that have much bigger problems than my
son. It does help but I still get so upset when he
scratches himself to bleeding. I always put him in
long sleeves and pants. He even wears cotton, long
sleeve footed pj’s all day. I have even went to the
extent of sewing socks on the end of his pj’s so he
    cant itch as well.
I am not familiar with probiotics? I know fish oil is
good, but he and I are allergic to fish and shellfish.
Would this be a problem or could we still take it? I
also read on Dr.Weil’s website that black currant oil

is good. Do you know anything about this? He is also
allergic to wheat, eggs, milk, melon and tree nuts so
of course we avoid all of this. He currently drink
rice milk and seems to like it. I also cook with it. I
do have some 100% shea butter here and I will try it.
Thank you for your response. It sure is nice to talk
with people who understand my situation. It sure makes
you feel like a bad mom when you are at the store and
someone has to ask "what is wrong with him". Of course
I just started being rude back and saying none of your

Thanks again and your right laughter is the best

Probiotics are VITAL. The best brand of probiotic supplements i have tried is
Primal Defense by Garden of Life. I actually use it to make fermented beverages
in my home along with my kefir grains. It is an excellent product. I would also
recommend you obtain some kefir grains from GEM Cultures and begin making
fermented foods. You can make beverages from combinations of fruits, herbs and
juices that are packed full of beneficial microbes as well as the beneficial
ingredients of the foods. I absolutely adore these drinks. They taste so good! I
can post some recipes if anyone is interested. Kefir grains are traditionally
used in milk to make kefir, cheeses and yogurt, but they will culture any liquid
that has adequate sugar and/or citric acid. I usually add honey and lemon to all
my blends just to make sure those little guys are well fed. They consume most of

the sugar over the fermenting period and the finished drink is not sweet at all,
just slightly tart and taking on the flavor of
the added ingredients. You can even ferment teas.

Karena, I just wanted to confirm what Carissa said
    about probiotics…..(beneficial flora for your
gut)…they do the opposite of antibiotics. I have
used the primal defense from garden of life for Abby,
just like Carissa mentioned, however she hates it and
says, I don’t like the black powder. She will take
it, but she does much better with Multi-genics Ultra
flora. THat one has to stay cool, so the micro-flora
will not die. But, it is a white powder that is
tasteless. Let me know if you need anything else.
Carissa just encouraged me to use EFT, (emotional
freedom technique). Maybe that would be of benefit to
you and your baby. God bless.

You really are a good mom! ALways listen to your child when they tell you they
don’t like the taste of something. Young children generally don’t have the food
addiction we do, so when their tastebuds tell them they don’t want something,
it’s usually for a good reason. Now, when they get old enough to just want
candy, french fries and ice cream all the time, naturally you have to put your
foot down. But, their bodies usually know what they need.
Nikki, have you tried the culture test with your new probiotics? Just open a few
capsules into 8 ounces of milk and allow it to sit for 24 hours. If the milk is
cultured and ends up with a thicker texture and a pleasant sour or yeasty aroma,
it is a good probiotic as the bacteria were still alive and able to do their
job. However, if the milk is still runny and has a rotten or rancid smell, the
probiotics are no good because they were already dead and unable to multiply.
This is the only test I trust for probiotics. By far the best I have found has
been live kefir grains from GEM Cultures. Coming in a close second was the
Primal Defense from Garden of Life.

Really you can throw anything into the mix and see what you come up with. I tend
to be low on zinc, b vitamins and vitamin C in my daily diet, so these are the
mixes I use. You can customize them for your own nutritional needs.
    Strawberry kiwi lemonade
    1 kiwi, peeled and mashed
    Several strawberries, mashed
    1/2 lemon, sliced very thin
1" piece of ginger root, sliced thin
    2 tablespoons raw, organic honey
put ingredients into a quart mason jar and fill up with pure, filtered water or
fresh pressed veggie or fruit juice. Allow it to ferment for 24-48 hours. I
prefer the 48 hour brews. Shaking the jar from time to time helps. After the 48
hours, strain out the kefir grains and reserve for the next batch. I like to
filter my brews through a flour ack cloth and into a clean mason jar, then put
them in the fridge. I save a little of the brew and put it in with the kefir

grains for the next batch. You must either put a sprouter cap on (they have
holes) or loosen the mason jar lid several times a day or the carbon dioxide the
bacteria give off will blow the cap off the jar. You will end up with a tart,
slightly carbonated fruity lemonade full of probiotics. The bacteria even help
pre-digest and extract nutrients from the fruit. They also increase B vitamins
    by large amounts.

    Ginger Brew
36 grams thin sliced ginger root (about 4 tablespoons)
    1/2 lemon
    3 tablespoons organic, raw honey
Fill jar again with water and ferment in the same way. This has a nice ginger
bite and is great for upset stomach.

    Berrilicious
    Handful of organic Strawberries, mooshed
    2 handfuls organic blueberries, smooshed
    1 handful organic raspberries, smooshed
    1/2 lemon, sliced thin
    2 tablespoons honey
Fill jar and ferment for 48 hours. This one has a gorgeous magenta color and it
    is delicious.

    Herb lemonade
small bunch of organic parsley, chopped
    1/2 lemon, sliced thin
handful of fresh basil leaves, chopped
a few pieces of other herbs of choice (thyme and sage are good ones)
    2 tablespoons honey
Fill with water and ferment fo 48 hours. This one has a nice bite from the
parsley and the basil really adds some flavor. You can also add ginger to the
    mix.

    Hard Apple Cider
1/2 an organic apple (organic only!) chopped and mooshed
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder (or to taste)
    dash of nutmeg
1" piece of ginger root, sliced thin
Juice the other half of the apple and mix in with the water. You can even use
half fresh pressed apple juice, half water for more apple flavor. This one is
gooood. Can’t wait for apple season to roll around!

By the way, if you are wanting to make an alcoholic beverage, simply stain out
the kefir grains and the fruit after 48 hours and allow the kefirade to sit at
room temp for a few more days. Drink responsibly! :-) Carisa

switch between, Vaseline, Vanicream, Eucerin and Crisco. Yes crisco
seems strange. I am not sure if anyone has tried it since I am new
to this site. A dermatologist suggested it when my son was younger.
It is not as moisturizing as the others but it melts into the skin
and it is easy to use. I dont dry my son after a bath. I just wrap
him in a towel and then immediately use a thin layer of one of the
emoillents. Then I use a special cream. Right now I am using
freederm (it is ok but does contain 1% cortisone), calendula cream,
skin-e-dip (which is in the mail and haven’t tried yet) or any of
the oils you are talking about. Then I put another layer of

emoillent on top. The best thing I have done which has helped
dramatically for my sons itching was sewed thin cotton socks on the
end of my son’s pj’s for when he sleeps. I put him in these for
naptime and bedtime. He is 2 years old and of course he hates them
    but gets used to them.
My other suggestion is if it is not too humid where you live to run
a humidifier in their room. It is very humid where I live so I dont
have to do this. I only do it during the winter months.
I am going to start Black Currant oil, does anyone know about this.
I hope that my suggestions gave you some ideas. Good luck!

I myself’s been suffering frm psoriasis dry skin condition. I found out that
petroleum jelly with olive oil extract has been workin for me. I’d strongly
reccomend that as i’d been a freak for long. I’ve’d psoriasis on my face for
long enough that i gotta put a break to’t. I applied the substance on my face &
other affected areas before bedtime to avoid all the grisly feeling. I hoped
it’d help. May God bless ur Child’

    Meivy,
Have you started with the basics? How much water is your baby getting? It
sounds like your baby needs hydration from the inside. Water, water, and
more water, and I don’t mean juice. Also, healing external treatment is one
thing, but if she is dehydrated no amount of external treatment is going to
    help.

Also, she could be allergic to the products you are using on her clothes?
Are you keeping her in a lot of clothes washed with commercial detergent?
Or she may be allergic to something you are using on her like those
commercial baby products. Maybe you might try cleaning products and baby
products you can get from the health food store.

WOW…thank you guys so much for the reply, concern, advices and prayers. My
baby’s skin wasn’t so dry when I was aquaphor to hydrate and freederm
(1%hydrocortisone) to get rid of the redness, was always reluctant to use all
that was prescribed to her…and I didn’t, but used the hydrocortisone when she
turned red. She’s taking an average of 4oz of water a day…I’ve been using a
baby detergent from seventh generations, I only use a little bit. Since I
joined this site, I’ve been trying the natural aproach, I bought the bronner’s
soap for babies, I’m putting extra virgin coconut oil on her while she’s still
wet from the bath, and putting 100%shea butter on her throughout the day. She’s
been getting very dry and rough…do you guys know why that might be?
I thank god for the group, you guys do a lot better job than the 10 different
doctors we’ve visited. You listen, ask questions, show concern, offer advice
and check up….everything a doctors gets big bucks for doing..

    Thank you very much,

    Meivy

Where did you get the shea butter? It could possibly be contaminated with
solvents if it is not from a pure supplier. The African Shea Butter company has
the best, purest butter I have found and it is fair trade and ethically produced
    and farmed.
Also, make sure you are rinsing the salts from her skin, thoroughly, and
applying plenty of shea butter and coconut oil while she is still damp from the
bath. Even then, it will take 4-6 weeks for her skin to respond. Skin takes a
while to heal. She may just be shedding the dead skin off the top layer of the
epidermis right now so she looks and feels drier, but new, healthier skin is on
it’s way up to the surface. Remember to giver her the cod liver oil as well.
This is vitally important. Eczema is not something that can be cured only with
    topical treatments.

    hello everyone,

I was reading the massages, I know how you feel, it is not easy deal with
eczema, especially when you are a baby, they can not tell you how they feel, and
they feel so bad that they can not do anything, my daughter she is now 20 month,
she had dry skin when she born, by 2 month she star patches of eczema by 6 month
her hole body was cover, by 9 month even the scalp, and the eyes, we saw 6
pediatricians, 2 dermatology’s, an allergist, and a naturist but nothing, until
she was 18 month we saw and allergist, She gave us a diet of no dairy, soy,
peanuts, nuts, eggs, wheat, chicken and beef. also no citric, berries, and
melon. Just for a month to see, and after you introduce one at the time, to see
    what happen,
It is not so hard we eat veggies, fruit, cod fish and pork… I prepare
everything in home, Is a little boring diet, I gave her a potato and some corn
just plain little salt for couple a days then I gave her other veggies like

broccoli, peas, carrots, just steam, then some fish and pork. (we did not eat
nothing already made or outside, no sweets or snack) (I found rice snacks, and
rice cracker )for her to snack…( I eat the same diet as her because she still
    breastfeeding).
But I star notice that her skin star healing we use Elocon ( cortisone) very
little, we use some atarax, vitamins, flax seed oil(omega oil), and culturell
(probiotic), and it work for us.
It takes time, fist all the redness got better, she was peeling off, little by
little all her chest, and back, then the legs and arms, she has some at her
hands and feet, but is getting better, her face clear up, her eyes are OK now
she has some at her scalp, but her hair is growing and the mos important is that
she is not as itchy, she looks normal now….
She get some redness spots, but they go away, for us the diet was the
difference, is been 2 month and we are very happy, I like to share It may help
    you.

    Hi Pamela,
It is wonderful to hear that your baby has gotten such great relief from
changing her diet. Just a note though on the corn. Corn is very drying and
energy robbing to both animals and humans. So you might want to reconsider
not giving her corn. It is very difficult on the digestive system, and it
takes a great deal of energy away from the body’s system to digest which
means that energy has to come from somewhere else within her little body to
digest it. Maybe that little additional energy might go instead to her
healing instead of digesting. Just a thought.

True, and corn is a grain, not a vegetable, and is of little nutritional value.
We are all better off without corn and it’s by products.
