new to group any good shampoos or homemade treatments for flaky scal
Hi guys i have an ongoing problem with an itchy scalp which when
itched produces flakes similar to dandruff. Does anyone know any good
shampoos or treatments that dont make the scalp itch. Im from
Australia so any other Aussies who know of good commercial ones Id be
grateful.

The only shampoo/conditioner I have had any luck with is Neutrogena Triple
Moisture Active Soothing Shampoo and Conditioner (The shampoo and
conditioner are separate products) I attached a picture of it but I don’t
know if this group accepts attachments. I have tried other "dandruff/flaky
scalp" shampoos/conditioners with the same active ingredient(Pyrithione Zinc
0.5%) but this one has extra moisturizers and works much better. It doesn’t
cure it but definitely helps. Here is a link to a store online that has it
so you can see what it looks like:
I have tried many different shampoos/conditioners products with salycic acid
and they DO NOT work. In fact it seems to irritate my eczema more. Make sure
you read all the ingredients in the products you try. It helps to keep the
area moisturized. If you can, don’t shampoo you hair as often. Just rinsing
it well with water and conditioning it is good. After you get out of the
shower and dry your hair (don’t rub your scalp with a towel either- just pat
dry) put moisturizer on the areas that are affected. The heavier the
moisturizer the better. I put moisturizer on the areas a couple times of
day. Good Luck!

Hi Melissa,
I’ll be honest, the doctors will not give you anything that will help
because it won’t address the actual cause.
I’ve found a few things through trial and error that have worked for me;
coconut oil rubbed into the scalp and left on one hour before showering
helps a lot,
not using soaps/shampoos but rather Dr. Bronner’s Castille Soap (I use
the tea tree type),
and make your body more alkaline through diet.
I personally would never use a petroleum product on my skin. My basic
rule is if I cant eat it, I won’t put it on my skin.
Hope this helps,
Raine

I just wanted to say that I use the Dr. Bronner’s
Castile soap on my 2 year old son also and found it to
help quite a bit. He has severe eczema and also scalp
eczema. Since his hair is short is rinses out without
a problem. Every few days I wash his hair with an
organic tea tree oil shampoo to strip what might be
left from the castile and it has helped tremendously.
I use the pure baby mild unscented on him and I also
use it on my severly dry skin. It is the best I have
found over anything. We got it from drugstore.com.
They also have many different scents if you like. I am
glad to hear it is helping you also!!

I have used Dr. Bronners and noticed it left my hair really dry and felt
like rubber bands. I already have dry hair. Do you have this problem with
your son?

I tried a shampoo called "Polytar", which is basically
a coldtar based shampoo. It worked on my scalp
psoriasis and stopped the itching too. I also tried
one called Exorex, which I got on prescription from my
Doctor.
Good Luck!
