2 Eczema creams required to carry new cancer warnings
WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (Xinhuanet) — Two prescription creams to treat
eczema will have to carry "black box" warnings about possible cancer
risks, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Thursday.
The FDA action, in accordance with its advisory committee recommendation
last February, affects Novartis AG’s Elidel and Astellas Pharma Inc.’s
Protopic. "Black box" warning is the strongest type used in the United
States.
The new labels are also required to clarify that both treatments are
recommended for use only after other prescription topical medicines have
been tried first.
The FDA decision is based on reports of cancers, including skin cancer
and lymphoma, in patients using the two drugs. There had been reports of
78 cases as of last October. However, no evidence has yet established a
clear link between the drugs and human cancer risk.
Novartis and Astellas continued to defend the safety of their products,
but agreed to make the requested changes in labelling. Meanwhile, the
companies are conducting long-term safety studies.
FDA said in a statement "Although studies are being conducted by the
manufacturers of both drugs to try to answer questions about cancer
risk, it could be many years before the research is concluded."
Elidel and Protopic are applied to the skin to control eczema by
suppressing the immune system. Eczema is a rash-like inflammation that
causes itchy, red skin. It can also be treated with antihistamines, oral
and topical steroids and over-the-counter products. Enditem

Jeez - how many of us have had that prescribed to us? I really hate feeling
like a labrat. I had a horrible reaction to Protopic and my eczema actually
spread over a larger portion of my body after using it & it still hasn’t really
recovered.
I never liked this stuff, but then again, I’m anti-cortizone too.

this is my latest thing and I think it’s been doing me pretty well. I stopped
using anything with Dimethicone or Lanolin (which I’m allergic to) and now I am
cycling in a tea tree oil lotion with olive oil & coconut oil. I try not to use
the same thing for more than 2-3 days at a clip & I think this might be helping.
I have said this before, but I think that my problem must be coming from
something I am constantly exposed to, but I’m not sure what that is. If so, do
you think it will work if I don’t constantly expose myself to foods, lotions,
etc.? I can’t tell you how dramatically better the difference is when I change,
but then it gets worse in a few days if I keep using the same thing.
I am also taking vitamin B, E, adding cod liver & flax oils and trying to
incorporate more good oils & fats into my diet. I also avoid nuts and eggs,
tho’ I want to try more eggs.
This may not really be news and I think I’m repeating myself, but I keep
trying to change things and see what might work. I’ve been getting good results
(and my diet has been crap lately), so I’m trying to figure out if I’m getting
something right or if I’m just getting lucky.
That said, I still think diet is critical. I just think I’ve been lucky
enough to avoid my triggers…

time! SOMEBODY HELP ME!

You may not want to use tea tree oil straight on your face. I would take a few
drops & mix it in with another light lotion. Otherwise, you may not be able to
open your eyes due to the menthol quality…
It does fade in a little while (15-20 minutes?). I would definitely dilute
straight tea tree oil. A little goes a long way.

When I first started suffering with my eczema very badly in 2003 I was given
both creams at different times. I heard about the cancer scare I believe it was
on the news in 20004 or 2005. I never renewed the prescription because it didn’t
work on my eczema anyway.

You’ll want to mix it with a carrier oil (organic olive oil will do).
You can also add a few drops to your soap, shampoo, whatever.

There is a lotion you can buy (Thursday Island is one, easy to buy in
supermarkets amd health stores - there’d have to be others, maybe do a
search). Straight tea tree oil is way too strong to put on your face - but
you could mix a few drops of the 100% oil with a moisturiser (so it smells
very tea treeish). I have done that when I am out of the lotion, mixed it
with Oil of Olay sensitive skin creme worked OK, I haven’t tried any others.
LOL, the smell. I love it!! Must be an Australian thing maybe, gum trees??
Also, I wouldn’t put it on the skin around my eyes as it will dry the skin
out too much there.
When you put it on the affected areas, you may experience a sort of burning
or stinging feeling, but I always found that was just part of the action of
the oil on inflammed skin. For me that is. You could just try a small patch
for starters and see what you think of it. I left it on overnight so it had
lots of time to do its job.
I slathered on the lotion the first time (apart from skin around eyes)and it
cleared my skin up fast (as I posted before).
I should add here that any oil such as coconut, olive, macadamia, mineral,
essential oils etc etc all make my face flare up.
I don’t know why - I can put oils on the rest of my body, just not my face.
It seems the less I put on it the better - just exfoliate, moisturise and
sometimes use the tea tree lotion.
Anyway, Stacey GOOD LUCK, I really hope it helps you!
I wish I had a before photo to show you of my face! Like a red, blown up
puffer fish - now it’s normal looking, as long as I stick to my simple
routine.

In another post read that staph and fungus live in affected psoriasis and
eczema skins.
It’s possible that when I used tea tree on my face and cleared it up, it may
have been possible too that demodex mites were thriving there as well (due
to inflammed skin, heat??, compromised immune system - rosacea) so that is
another possibility of critters going wild when conditions are favourable.
Tea tree oil kills demodex mites as well.

There is a lotion called Renew that contains tea tree oil and it is the best
lotion ever. I use straight tea tree oil for for anything I need to heal up on
my skin. Prevention is the best key.

Evidence Mounts That Trace Chemicals Can Harm Fetuses and Children

Hi, I am responding to your post regarding the "menthol" effect of
tea tree oil used neat(undiluted) on your face. You may want to
double check the oil you purchased to be sure it is 100% Essential
Oil of Tea Tree. If it is a "blend", or if it says "fragrance" or if
it lists any other ingredient on the bottle besides tea tree oil, I
would beware. There are a lot of fakes out there, and a lot of very
poor products touting to be tea tree oil that are high priced and
actually have already been cut with a carrier. These are not what
you need.
Good eo of tea tree has just a very mild "menthol" effect, and even
used undilute is safe, according to "The Essential Oils Book" by
Colleen Dodt. The direct quote says, "Tea tree is safe to use neat
on even the most delicate parts of the body . . . there is NO other
essential oil I would recommend applying in this manner". I have
used it straight on my face, and I have used it to treat vaginal
yeast infections quickly and very effectively without diluting (and
hey, talk about a delicate part of the body!). If you feel you must
dilute it, though, and you are using it on your face, I would use
grapeseed oil as the carrier oil due to the non-comedigenic
properties(won’t clog pores). You would mix this as 1/2 ounce
grapeseed oil and 6 drops of pure essential oil of tea tree. You can
use this daily. You don’t want to get it in your eyes, but if the
oil is good quality, it should not burn or make your eyes water
heavily. If you don’t want to dilute it in oil, you could dilute it
in warm water and apply with a washcloth or sponge.
I’ve had some experience with these things, and I recommend the book
cited above for some good home recipes and good information.

you detect that? Please tell me more? I often have a tingling feeling in my
