Dry Skin and Eczema

Hello everyone, I’m a new member.

I’ve read through some of the postings as well as the criteria for
posting here. I’m told your main focus is health and that this is a
non-commercial group, however, I wanted to share my story just in
case it might help any of you out there - as I wish someone had
shared this story with me.

I must tell you that I have had eczema since I was a small child and
also have asthma. I’ve been on every medication there is and I’ve
read many articles. I’ve read that the two (eczema and asthma) are
linked - and I truly believe it after my experiences. I believe a
lot of our troubles are linked (astham, eczema, constipation,
sinus). I’ve suffered with them all for many many years.

As I grew older, my troubles eventually traveled to my sinus. I
spent about 2 years with such bad sinus trouble it was becoming
increasingly difficult to work. I event went to for acupuncture to
seek relief - which I got - but only for about 20 minutes. I was
very discouraged. I was beginning to feel that if I ever took an
asthma attack while I was suffering with such clogged sinus I would
indeed die. I tried every over the counter product out there - to
no avail. Needless to say - this lead to my search for the out of
the ordinary cure - as the over the counter stuff/prescription
medication was not working.

About 7 or 8 years ago I went to a Naturalpath and had an IgE and
IgG blood test done for sensitivities/allergies. Turns out I don’t
have any true allergies (as the Dr’s had told me) - but I do have
sensitivities - to many things in my diet. After being put on an
elimination diet for 2 weeks I could not believe the difference in
my skin - as well as my sinus. It was nothing short of amazing.

About the same time I found out about the sensitivities, I was also
introduced to a new line of supplements. These helped tremendously
as well - with my skin and this time my bowels. It amazes me that
we are one of the best fed countries in the world - but we are also
so undernourished. There are very few nutrients in our food these
days - and people wonder why their skin, lungs, and bowels aren’t
working properly. Oh, I’d always taken vitamins - but I didn’t know
they did nothing for me - until I took ones that did. I didn’t know
there was such a vast difference in the supplements on the market
today.

After spending about 6 months eliminating the foods that I can’t
have (corn, dairy, parmesan cheese, garlic, to name a few) and
taking my new found supplements, I no longer use my steroid creams,
my inhalor, or any additional items to loosen my bowels. If I
cheat - and have a lot of cheese - I pay. My hands become so itchy
I think I’ll go crazy - and my asthma flares up. Yes, I have to be
choosy about what dish soap I use, and what cleaners I use in my
home - but I no longer have red itchy skin all over my body, I very
seldom (if ever) use my inhaler, and best of all - I’m regular
(something I have NEVER been in my life).

I would encourage all of you to take a look at your diet, the
supplements you take, and see if there is any correlation. I would
never go another day eating like I used to - or without my
supplements.

I wish you all luck. Just felt I had to share my information after
reading some of the posts here.

Yours in Health,

Jennifer.

I, too, starting eliminating foods from my diet. I’ve been on a raw food
diet for two years and I can tell you first hand that dairy and wheat are
the first things to eliminate out of one’s diet in searching for an answer
to eczema. My skin is a WHOLE lot better, and I’m still in the process of
trying to find out what triggers certain episodes of itchy, red patches of
skin on my hands. After doing extensive research, I’ve supplemented my diet
with what I feel are the proper nutrients that fill all the gaps that most
people freak out about when discussing a raw diet. I’m also seeing other
benefits like more energy and focus.

I’m not suggesting that anyone go raw, I’m just saying that by eliminating
one food at a time, you might start to see a pattern that will help you to
    find a solution.

I also eliminated any yeast/gluten products, severely cut down on sugar and
incorporated more vegetables in my diet. My eczema is slowly getting better.
I noticed whenever I ate a lot of bread it was the worst. I think I may have
    Celiac Disease though.

I drink soy milk (vanilla). It’s sweet but I like it. I was also told goat’s
cheese is better for me. I have an addiction to cheese :-) This kind doesn’t
    bother me but it’s expensive.
I also crave regular (skim milk) but now I crave soy milk. It gets better
    with time.

I am on a gluten/dairy free diet now and I am seeing results. Sleeping all
through the night no crazy itchy like in the past.

I also suggest wearing little soft gloves to bed. Keep your nails short too.

    Thanks!

Okay - so how is anyone getting along with coffee or without coffee? I have a
hell of a time giving it up…

I am going to try an stop dairy & gluten this wekk just to see. Anyone else
doing this? Do you feel like posting some info about how you feel and any
results you’re getting? I’ll try and do the same…

I know what you’re feeling because I love coffee with Sugar and Cream! I
have cut down on sugar severely and cut all yeast/bread products out of my
diet. Part of this was because I have what doctors call "Irritable Bowel
Syndrome" and always have loose stools and urgency. I came to my own
conclusion that it may be candida (yeast overgrowth) in my gut. I have to
tell you I feel a lot better! I also use a gentle cleanse right now. You may
notice you might get constipated so make sure you eat lots of veggies. It is
also hard to find salad dressing with no yeast extract and since Vinegar is
not good for yeast I have been making my own Salad Dressing. Basically, I
put Extra Virgin Olive Oil (It doesn’t taste as strong as regular Olive Oil)
and then sprinkle non-yeast/gluten spices on top of that.
I then mix it all together well.
I stopped Diary as well since my stomach can no longer tolerate milk and
barely cheese. I started to eat Yoplait Custard Style yogurt once in awhile
for the acidophilus benefits. (I also take acidophilus pills) For some

reason their Custard Style yogurt doesn’t bother my stomach as much as
    regular yogurt.
Unfortunately yeast and/or gluten are in many foods we eat and don’t even
    realize it.
For instance: Salad Dressing, Spices, Dried Preserved Foods, Some mass
produced corn chips, yogurt, pudding, cheese, coffee creamer, soup, etc…
Gluten has many different names it can fall under. If you look up any web
page on Celiac Disease they will tell you what to look for. If you are just
going to try cutting out Gluten they have many products at Natural Food
    Stores that are Gluten-Free.
    I hope this helps!

    Hi Keith,

Yes I too struggle greatly with giving up coffee (I am actually drinking a cup
    now).
I am getting headaches though, without the caffeine.

I am currently on a gluten/dairy free diet now..so far so good :-) My stomach
    feels
better too without the dairy. I was told a while ago that I had a touch of
IBS so I am Ok with the soy milk. Also I stopped eating hot oatmeal. (Small
traces in it. I called the company).

I feel less itchy. I feel more energetic (less dragged down). I sleep much
    better.

If you drink alcohol try and cut down or stop. I had a couple glasses of wine
on Easter for the first time in months. Got a little buzz that I’m not use
    too but
    no itches thank God.

    Best wishes.
