eczema on hands
I am on my wits end on my hands???? I swear I am to the point where I just
want to cut my hands off…….please if anyone out there have a similar
symptom and actually found a way to control it. I used to have it on my feet
where it never really bothered me but my hands….it started 3 years ago and it
just got so bad now…I already forgot how touching someone feels
like…having my hands on someone’s face….help!!! This is not living..this
is like
dying a slow death where I just sometimes lock myself in my room so nobody else
will see me. I have read so many self cure stuff but is it really possible
to just eat live food and no wheat, dairy or sugar…that takes care of 99%
of everything we eat!!! I just hope the medical community is doing something
about this….this is life taken away from us….I can’t even travel overeas
because of my skin condition. I thank God that I have met someone who is
understanding enough but it really keeps me from meeting people and it affects
my career to further since I cannot meet people with these hands …even I am
grossed out from it…bleeds, cracks, weeps!!! I wish it would go back to my
feet where it was…least nobody saw that!!!

I have the dermatitis on my face. So believe me, I know the pain and
suffering of the social stigmas.

Hi,
I am so sorry to hear of your dilemma. I have it on my pinky and I suffer
like that on that one finger and the tops of my feet ITCH like crazy. It
sometimes
has to get worse to bet better. I’ve been there.
Do you drink coffee ? Alcohol ? Smoke ? ALL of these are TRIGGERS.
No caffeine. No sugars. No tobacco.
Do you use soap ? Try Cetaphil antibacterial soap to wash and bathe.
Don’t use DRYER SHEETS..
Do you use CHEER FREE detergent ?
Are your bed/pillows encased in allergy free casings ? Wal-Mart & Target sell
them.
I use coconut oil and Eucerin on my hands and feet.
Wrap your hands in cold compresses (towels) to help with the burn and pain
of itching and oozing/bleeding. You may need an antibiotic to help with
infection. Wear soft gloves to bed.
I understand your pain. You are NOT alone.
God bless,
Maggie

Eucerin has a chemical I am sensitive to in it….I just posted about it (that
big "m" word). I was suprised that Eucerin would have it….but just in case
someone else might want to try it, they may want to test it out first. Most of
my eczema experiences, I didn’t know about being sensitive to that. I am much
better but still have flare ups, just not nearly as bad.

you can live without wheat, dairy and sugar although it is hard. i have
eczema on hands and elbows but my 11 yr old daughter has it everywhere. she
is allergic to animals, pollens, mould, wheat corn you name it. she also has
asthma which disappeared when we changed her diet. the medical profession is
doing heaps but you don’t want to rely on them we stopped using the steroid
creams as they were destroying her skin and turning it to leather. i have
found over the years my own solutions. i have PCOS and bad acne on my face
and all the research into diet is very similar to my daughter’s eczema. we
need to get back to nature. hunter gatherer. fruit, vegetables and meat. un
processed and organic if possible. cut back on all grains wheat, corn, oats
even soy. watch out for GM food because you cannot guarantee what was in
them
as for outside no soap is good. it strips the natural oils form your skin.
water is sufficient for cleaning if you have to use soap do it
sparingly.wear cotton gloves all-day at home with whatever moisturiser is
good for you underneath. i love aloe Vera from my plant in garden but DD
says it makes her more itchy jojoba oil is another favourite or olive oil.
get as many chemicals out of your life as you can go back to nature.
most of all you have to learn to live with it and accept. stress is a major
factor. yes it’s tough and unfair but you can’t do anything about that.
learn to meditate or relaxation techniques.
i had DDup til 1am last night crying her eyes out about it because she ate
chocolate for Easter (i didn’t give her it) and has was itchy all over. in
one night she has flared up and whole body is raw, red and bleeding. so I’m
a bit sensitive at the moment. she is constantly complaining about her lot
in life.

pataganda - if you think there may be some infection there too, maybe try
Tea Tree (Meleleuca) or similar to deal with it.
Antibiotics, in my opinion, are one of the root causes (besides diet) of
many, apparent ‘no cure’ illnesses.
I understand that you’re feeling so desperately unhappy.
All the Best,
Jo.

I know how you feel, my hands get pretty bad sometimes…I just had an infection
on my thumbs for some reason. They were the worse they have ever been and
swelled up and broke through one of my nails, it was quite weird and I am not
sure how it will recover (nail), or if it will. Luckily it doesn’t hurt
anymore. I had to take antibiotics but they seem better now. I usually try to
avoid medications and I don’t go to Derms anymore. If my hands flare I use over
the counter hydrocortizone cream sparingly and wear cotten gloves over the cream
at bedtime. It usually helps and seems to heal the cracks up usually quickly.
I hate having anything on my hands and wash them alot, probably why they flare.
but I also have a 6 month old and need to touch him often, hold him, change him,
so I hate if my hands are flaring. It was hard when my thumbs were so bad, as
my son likes to grab my hands.
Well.. I hope you find some relief. Also some comfort knowing others understand
what you are going through.

hey Pat -
Until recently, I’ve had really bad eczema on my hands for about 20 years - to
the point where I couldn’t move my fingers many times, the swelling was
incredible and the pain was too much to bear. I felt like I had some kind of
deep-bone arthritic pain that shot up my arms at times. Awful stuff.
Now, it isn’t on my hands, but has moved up my arms and to my neck, for reasons
I can’t understand.
I couldn’t feel much on my hands for years and still really can’t. I am still
shy about my hands and I still hide them when I am talking. I’ve had a really
hard time just relaxing about them and I really don’t know if I ever will. Even
now, I can move my hands, but they’re dry and they still don’t look right - I
have a scaly skin on the back of my hands that is red most of the time, but I
can bend and use my hands, so I feel grateful.
I think diet is really important, but I haven’t gotten that figured out just
yet. What I have figured out is that it’s mostly contact aggravants that get me
- soaps, lotions, detergents for laundry - especially hand lotions. If it
burns, get off your skin fast! It must have taken me 12 years to realize that.
I hope this helps because being able to use and move my hands has made a world
of difference. You are not alone and it does get really tough and there are so
many times, I just broke down from the pain.

OMG you mean it can get worse ……this is awful…..how am I supposed to
live a normal life with this….yours got worse…..how is your diet???? I have
gone thru sites where all they eat are organic veggies….this isn’t living
at all…I feel like I am dying yet I am alive.
I don’t smoke nor drink alcohol. Yes, I am guilty of eating junk food but
that goes to 95% of all americans.
Altho, some eczema like on my knees and elbows are slowly disappearing with
my cleansing. I used to have it on my feet but it disappeared after almost 20
years now it transferred to my hands. I keep picking on my feet wanting for
it to go back there but it heals right away. Please let me know more about
your conditon. Did you have this since childhood??? How are you with your
diet????
January 7th, 2007 at 11:13 am
You know, someething similar happens with me and a diluted (VERY diluted)
vinegar solution. When it’s really bad & itching, soak your hands in a diluted
solution (maybe 1 part vinegar to 8 parts water) and let soak for a while.
Surprisingly helpful.
Pat - check out all detergents, lotions, whatever you use. I am in the middle
of another breakout and I think it’s becausse we just got another detergent.
You have to be very careful with those. But as it’s on your hands, watch your
lotions & check soaps or anything acidic.
How’s my diet? Pretty miserable for this board - I drink coffee daily, I am
still smoking (picked it up again - again) and I drink alcohol. i am better
when I do less or none of these things. BUT - you should be able to get some
relief from figuring out exernal causes as well. For me, when it was that bad,
I was always getting hit from inside & out and the outside you can act on
quickly. When I figured out what thee soap problem was, my skin calmed down
almost immediately and was so much bettter in only a few days.
And yes, I have had this since I was about 6 or 7, I think.

Hi,
I totally agree with you Melinda and I thank you for your honesty.
I have suffered since my teens but not bad until my 30’s which is where I am
now.
I have gotten sad, angry, really angry, depressed and then I stopped reacting
and
started to be PROACTIVE and take control of my health and my life. Research
everything !!! The internet is wonderful for that.
Is your family on a "All Raw Diet" ? I have looked into www.shazzie.com
and www.thegardendiet.com and others.
Thanks.
Maggie

Hi
Vinegar is a great remedy for topical yeast/fungus. I wonder if you
may have a secondary yeast/fungal infection on your hands and this is
why you find relief from the vinigar.

Last week I nearly broke down in tears at work. My eczema is over about 80%
of my body, so I do understand what you are going through. What I have
found works best for me so far is warm baths with epsom salts. Then I use
some Tea Tree oil after the bath. I give that about 1/2 hour to soak in
then put on Vanicream. Vanicream is a skin cream that has no dyes,
fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, parabens or formaldehyde. This cream
works best for me as it seems the older I get the more I am allergic or
sensitive to. One other thing that takes the immediate itchiness away for
me is original formula Noxzema.
Last week I changed my diet, that seems to be helping already. Cut out all
processed foods, sugar, alcohol (and I do like a glass of wine but not at
the expense of my health). I’ve checked out a great book from the local
library, Tao of Long Life by Professor Chee Soo. The Ch’ang Ming diet that
he talks about it is basically what so many other folks here have been
talking about. Lots of whole foods, whole grains, fresh veggies & fruits
etc. It makes sense to me. If you look at the ingredients of most packaged
food you can’t even pronounce, much less know what most of the ingredients
are. My theory is that it can’t be good for us. Give it a week or so, it
gets easier and you will most definitely feel better.

I used to be so bad that it was nothing to have 2 or 3 fingers
wrapped in gause because they were weeping so badly. I know what you
mean when you say you don’t want to be around people - or have them
see your hands. It’s no fun.
Have you ever tried Prevex cream? The last visit to the
dermatologist my dr. recommended this - with an added steroid. You
can, however, buy it on the shelf in the pharmacy. I have terribly
dry hands and use it daily. I found it to be the best yet. When my
hands get really bad I use a bit of steroid with it - otherwise I
try to avoid the steroidal cream. Also, try avoiding all
antibacterial soaps. Cracks for sure with those.
I’ve found dairy and oatmeal to be the culprits for me. Too much
cheese or icecream and my hands are covered in tiny blisters and
extremely itchy (almost so bad I can’t stand it). If I avoid those
two items I’m usually pretty good - and of course I have to avoid
the soaps. Latex gloves can be bad also - try using rubber if you
need to do dishes.
I’ve also found taking a good nutritional supplement also helps -
with lots of things - like regulating bowels, sleep patterns, and
digestion (which is usually always a problem for those of us with
this lousy condition).
Good Luck to you.
Jennifer.
