6 month old with eczema
Hi all. I’m new to this group and new to the whole eczema issue. My
6 month old son was recently diagnosed with eczema. He has it pretty
much all over his little body and he’s been scratching away at his
skin until it bleeds. I keep mittens on him, but as soon as I take
them off and turn my back, he scratches. The dermatologist has given
me instructions on baths, skin care, etc. He has prescribed Cutivate
and hydrocortisone 2.5%. I hate using the cortisones on him, but
have applied them only because it breaks my heart to see him suffer
with the itching/discomfort. Anyway, I had been applying the
cortisone as directed and then applied only during flare-ups.
However, this morning after applying the 2.5% cortisone, my little
guy broke out in a bad allergic reaction - swollen face,
blotchiness, little blisters. He never showed signs of allergy to it
until today. It scared me so much and I am quite fed up with the
whole cortisone thing. It is obviously not a long-term solution. At
this point (after this reaction) it’s no longer even an option. What
do all of you recommend? I would like to try something more on the
natural remedy route. I’ve just started using flax seed oil in his
formula, but was told it would take a while for it to work (2-3
weeks). Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
I am so sorry to hear about your liitle boy. Please check out
www.eczema-natural-healing.com This woman lives in Seattle.
She healed herself NATURALLYTwith food, probiotics and other supplements.
Call her, she WILL call you back. Her e-mail and phone # are on the site.
Also check out www.eczema-usa.com. Dr. Ang says all eczema is a reaction to
dairy and it is an intestinal issue not a skin issue. Read up on his site.
Very helpful
and informative !!!
Also check out this book "Eczema Free for Life" written by a dermatologist.
Check your local library. The author is Adnan Nasir. He does not focus on

Hi, my son who is now nine months old has exzema and so does his dad!
I like your self am not happy with the steroid route, i don’t like
using it on such young skin.
My husband has been using aloe vera to control his eczema for over 5
yrs now, and i started using it on ewan when he was born for any dry
patches. Last week i stupidly put some clothes on his which i had
bought and i hadn’t washed, his arms became red, sore and weeping
within a couple of hours, so i started applying aloe vera gel, and then
half hour after that i appled aloe propolis, and i did this every time
i changed his nappy, by the end of the day the redness had gone, and in
two days it was just a light crusting and now a week later it is just
dry skin, once it had settled from weeking i just put aloe propolis on
twice daily. we use so much of the aloe vera we became distributors! it
worked out much cheaper getting it in bulk.
Have a look at this link and if i can help ay more then please pm me.

hello,
Did you visit an allergist?? Do you know what kind of allergies or what is he
sensitive to ?? do you breastfeed?….
my daughter has eczema too, her is most of the foods…once we took all the
foods she was allergic she improve, so much we use Elocon ( is cortisone compare
with others it work for us, I used very little after bath in red spots) (the 2.5
is too much for us did not work )
you think he is allergic to cortisone, just think what he was doing,? what he
eat,? even the day or two days before? if you breastfeed what did you eat?..he
was outside the sun?
I recommend you to star a diet avoid all process food, preservatives, and
artificial colors,
use fresh or frozen veggies and fruits, rice and hole grains.beans.
Avoid all dairy, soy, nuts, eggs, wheat, corn, melons, berries, tropical
fruits… after a 2 weeks if you notice an improvement, you can add a food at a
time and check if you see a reaction…
Add some multivitimins, and probiotic (www.culturell.com )
Your son will get better, but it takes time and understand, what is he
allergic to, once you find out you see he be fine…
Also what kind of lotion, shampoo, what you use for laundry if you use
softener or drying sheet, it could be that too…Do you have any pets?
hope this help you.. All these information the allergist gave us.

Thank you! No, we have not seen an allergist. The dermatologist suggested I
apply the cortisone again on a small area because he did not think it was a
cortisone allergy. I applied it and he had no reaction. The problem is that he
did not have anything different to eat (I am not breastfeeding anymore) and
nothing I do around the house has changed, so it’s really hard deciding what
could have caused the allergic reaction and eczema flare-up. I’ll keep looking
into it. Thanks again.

How long has your baby had eczema? I’ve had it twice in my life so far and it
has gone away on its own, or maybe due to the extra care I take of my hands.
I’ve only had it on one or two fingers. I might have had it as a baby, but of
course I don’t remember and neither do my parents.
One of my doctors said eczema is an allergic reaction to something. Your baby
maybe allergic to something he’s eating, breathing, touching, etc. Jojoba oil
and ice has worked the best for me, as I’m sure you’d liek to stay away from
cortisone and what not. My chinese herbalist also said it’s caused by the body
being too hot. I don’t know if your baby has started eating yet…? Try to keep
him cool, cotton and silk clothes, maybe a fruit popsicle, keep the a/c on and
try to see what happens when you avoid being outside too much. Hopefully he’ll
improve!
Hope he gets well soon

How about dust mites ? My allergist is HUGE on keeping those little guys and
their poop away from our skin. Get casings for your son’s crib
mattress/pillows and keep the room free of anything that can collect dust the
most (stuffed animals, fabric window treatments, carpeting…). Target sells
them for cheap.
Try Aquafor made by the Vaseoline people. Also I roll frozen water bottles up
and down my legs, it keeps me from scratching.
Do you live in NJ by any chance ?
Best wishes…

remember you never have an allergic reaction the 1st time you have or are
exposed to it. your body can only develop allergies after having been
exposed to something at least once sometimes many times. so don’t assume
it’s something new. we had pets for years before my daughter developed
allergies to them. so look at every thing in your babies life old and new.

Thank you so much for the advice. He’s had the eczema for about 2 months. The
part about being too hot struck a chord. I usually put my little guy in one of
those sleep sacks to keep him warm at night. Maybe he does get too hot. I’ll
keep him cooler and see what happens. Thanks again.

Thanks Maggie. I do try to keep dust mites out with the mattress/pillow covers.
I keep trying different things. For now, it seems like his eczema is looking
better so I am trying to keep track of what I’m doing different. I am in
Arizona.

Hi,
I just wanted to chime in and reiterate some of the feedback you have
been getting. My son now 2 1/2 years old developed severe eczema at 6
weeks old. We have been fighting it since. First defenitly look into
allergy tests. There is a blood test called RAST testing that can
determine allergies to foods. I am in the process in getting my son
retested since it has been since he was 1 year old. He is allergic to
milk, eggs, wheat, melon, tree nuts, banana, avocado, fish, shellfish,
soy, and citrus fruits. We used steriod creams a lot since it was the
only thing that helped. I finally found Melaleuca products, started
using them in January and haven’t used steriods since. They are great
products if you are interested in looking into them, www.melaleuca.com
Also, right now this time of year is difficult for him. Since the
weather change, warming up and everything blooming he gets more itchy
which of course leads to more of the rashes. I keep up on an
antihistamine and it helps. I give him atarax at night and claritin or
zyrtec during the day. I hope things get better but as I have seen
eczema can pop up at anytime and maybe it is not due to one thing. My
son was a normal skinned baby and then the next day he had eczema head
to toe. Hope you can find some relief for you baby.

hi,
Yes, I think an allergist will help you I heard that even the nutramigen is a
milk base formula, ( a friend of my with a child with severe eczema went to
see the same allergist that I go and she recomend to change the formula I don’t
remember the name)…
We took my baby to an allergist when she was 6 month and he did not recomend
nothing, for us was a waste of time….but when she was 18 month and we were
getting crazy with the eczema it seems we were in the peditrician office every
week…they recomend a differnt one we gave it a try…what a change, after a
week of doing the diet, change detergents, lotions, add some suplements she star
improving, and now is ok to deal it is not gone, but she is playing, eating,
Sleeping, (me too) ..
I think not all the allergist know that much about ezcema….so if they can
not help you look for another one…I live in atlanta the allergist web side is
www.familyallergycenter.com any questions just let me know..

Karena,
Have you tried the CounterAct Allergy from Melaleuca instead of the Claritin?
It’s a lot cheaper and has the same active ingredient (Loratadine) as Claritin.
I just ordered some for my brother-in-law. Let me know if it has worked for you.
Thanks,
Maribel

Hi Maribel,
I would use the CounterAct but I don’t have to. My
husband is in the military and we get prescriptions
for free. Also alot of over the counter items like
claritin, tylenol and things like that they give
prescriptions for. If it wasn’t free to us believe me
I would use the counteract but since it’s saving me
money somewhere I take advantage. Thanks for reminding
me though!!
